AWS Global Infrastructure

In 2006, Amazon Web Services (AWS) began offering IT infrastructure services to businesses as web services. AWS provides a highly reliable, scalable, and cost-effective cloud infrastructure platform by leveraging their Global Infrastructure, which consists of Regions, Availability Zones, and Edge Locations spread across 34 geographies. As on December 2024, AWS having 34 Regions, 108 Availability Zone, 600+ Edge Locations

AWS Region

A region is a logical component representing a geographical area.
Each region should have at least two availability zones.

AWS Availability Zone

Availability Zone is physical component representing the Data Center
Each with its own power , networking and connectity housed in separate facility

AWS Edge Location

•Edge location are AWS end points which are used for caching the content.

•Typically consist , Cloud front , CDN and Route 53.

You need to know that AWS randomizes availability zones on a per-account basis. For example, the US-east-1a availability zone in my account would be a completely different availability zone than the US-east-1a availability zone in another account.

Why does AWS do this? Typically, users tend to select the 1a or initial availability zone in their account. If everyone did this, the 1a zone would become too occupied. Therefore, AWS randomizes availability zones per account to distribute the load more evenly
